Orris root (root of the Iris) contributes a distinct violet and earthy aroma and improves the mouthfeel of gin. Both Orris Root and Angelica root are botanicals used in gin to provide an earthy backbone which balances against the juniper and spice flavours while also having a fixative effect.
The compounds found in Orris root and Angelica root play a key role in binding flavours together in gin and reduce the loss of volatile flavours and aroma during the distillation process known as the fixative effect.
